I contribute by leaving my computer on at night because thats when electricity is cheaper (Atleast in Europe) so powerplants won't throw away energy since they operate 24/7.
So since powerplants already produced the power, we can better use it well by playing Guild Wars!

This topic couldn't have been moved to a more appropriate forum....
"Off-Topic & The Absurd"
My computer would be on any way grinding away for:
[email protected] - find the little green men!
-ClimatePrediction.net - their goal is to predict what the climate will be like in 50 years by using thousands and thousands of computers left on to grind the numbers of climate prediction. Ironic...isn't it...hehe
Both of which use my video card when the screensaver is active...so the result is the same.

Al Gore consimes more energy than the entire city i live in.
The live earth concert carbon emission footprint is larger than that of my entire city in a year.
(And what to think of the kilotonnes of normal waste produced by it)
Now if carbon emissions did do something why do the greenhouse owners not inject carbon into their greenhouses to warm them? Simple it does not work that way.
It is not only a scam to get to our money but also to distract from the real threat to the environment. The dumping of all kinds of toxic materials.
A question to reveal the idiocy of this whole thing.
Why is it that it is is the civilians who have to do things and pay for stuff to change something while it is the industry that is doing most of the emissions.
Why should i turn of a few lightbulbs if the entire city is lit in commercial billboards? Why is almost 30% of television broadcasts commercial messages?
Reduce that and we can all safely light up the living room.

Even if global warming is real, the amount that it is going to warm is so little, it isn't going to have that much effect on most of us. Al Gore's nightmare scenerios are just to get people to buy his movie.
Frankly I think we should blame enviromentalists for global warming in the US. Thanks to them, we haven't seen a new nuclear power plant commissioned since 3 mile island over 30 years ago. We could be completely off of coal by now if it weren't for them.

The problems with nuclear reactors is the toxic waste. It takes a very long time for it to come to safe levels and where are you going to store it for hundreds or thousands of years while it is still toxic? A real solution is for the government to stop wasting money on bullshit pet projects and fund research on fusion power, which btw is what the sun uses, as its byproduct isn't toxic and produces a lot more power.

We can put the waste in safe places, like being buried deep under some mountain. It's the best option in terms of effeniency, enviroment, and power we have at the moment.
As for fusion, it's still years if not centuries off.

The OP wanted to share his thoughts and did so politely. He didnt complain or demand, he put forward tentative suggestions for discussion, with, i'd suggest, the tip of his touge in his cheek.
Why a number of you feel its your right to flame him and his thoughts, is beyond me. It is rude, uncalled for and adds nothing good to the thread.
Those of you who feel the need to post so flippantly, on a thread you said you have no concerns about the topic, do us all a favour and “Prepare your proof before you argue”. Stating something does or doesnt exist without backing that up is either stupid, arrogant or pointless.
When i saw the thread title i chuckled ;P I thought it was quite an interesting spin on being 'green' and computer gaming and specifically grinding heh.
The issue of global warming and all the discussion that would be required to discuss it fairly is too much to go into in this thread, so i wont; but I thought the op was balanced and considered and the closing sentence quite clever while getting his point across.
Good stuff cheers.

Here's a big surprise, too. The people who are such big advocates of the global warming scare will readily admit that the earth was healthiest millions of years ago when it was on average 5-7 degrees warmer! Of course the earth is warming, we are coming out of the little ice age. If you look at the history of the earth, our little warming spot here is just a little blip that never comes out of the regular trend of the earth's cycle, and we are still in one of the cooler periods of the earth, not warmer. If that's the case, warming the earth might be GOOD for us. Disease occurs when the earth is cold, not warm (ie. bubonic plague); and terminally sick people (leprosy, tuberculosis) are sent places with tropical climates (like Hawaii) for remediation. I'm all for INTENTIONAL global warming, I just don't think we're doing enough yet.

Uh, what about Malaria? There are diseases that come from warmer climates.

Sorry, let me clarify. Not ALL diseases occur when the earth is cold, but our immune system is much more susceptible in colder climates, which is why there is a TREND of major diseases and outbreaks occurring during colder times. Yes, there are some diseases that are more prevalent in warm weather, such as malaria, but that has more to do with the carrier than our health.

Malaria can be controlled by certain pestisides which kill the misqutoes that carry the disease.
I would think that the shorter, milder winters would save enough lives to offset the longer, hotter summers in most cases. IMO adaptation would be the best course of action to pursue now because there's no garuntee that we can stop global warming.

It's a well known fact that modern home appliances use a vast amount of energy while they're switched on. Turning an appliance off onto standby, or setting it to sleep mode doesn't stop power being used.
The problem is, as has been shown in this thread.. most people are either too arrogant to care or have just become too comfortable with thier current lives to feel that they should need to change (which is perfectly fair imo).
Suggesting global warming 'doesn't exist' is a load of BS. There is no doubt that an increase in Green House gases increases the rate at which the planet is warming up. There is some argument, however, as to whether or not this would actually be happening naturally anyway.
It would be ridiculous to assume that we could get everyone to stop using modern appliances, and it would be completely unpractical in this day and age. I do however think that we should make a bigger effort to save energy in our own homes. Even if Global warming 'doesn't exist', modern sources of energy are running out, and more sustainable methods will take years to develop to a stage where they can replace coal fired power stations etc.
If people here don't want to do it to prevent Global Warming etc for whatever reason, they should do it to be selfish - it saves you money afterall.
